Before teaching commences
Download Zoom Client
Download "Zoom Client for Meetings" directly at zoom.us/download
It should only be downloaded using this link.
After downloading you will find it in the program list:
PC:

- Click on the start button.
- Programs are sorted alphabetically. Scroll down to Z.
- Click on the blue Zoom button.
Mac:

- Click on Launchpad.
- Click on the blue Zoom button.
Hint! In the Zoom Client settings you can choose to have the client start automatically when you log on to the computer. This may be practical if you often use Zoom.
Log in once to activate your USN User
- When the download is complete a choice of sign in options will be displayed
- Select SSO
- Check that USN is in the field. It should appear automatically.
- Log in with your normal FEIDE login credentials, i.e. USN User Name and Password. If necessary, look for "Universitetet i Sørøst-Norge" for the correct affiliation.
Once the user has been authenticated you will be asked if you want to continue connecting in the browser. Confirm this.
Your Client will then look like this:
- If you don't log out of the client manually, it will remember your login credentials next time, so you won't need to log in again on your own machine.
- You may be logged in to Zoom on one computer, one tablet or one mobile phone at a time. If you are already logged in on one device, logging in on an additional device will automatically log you out on the first one.
- If you don't want to use Zoom Client, you can go to https://usn.zoom.us and select "Sign in", then "USN", and log in using your FEIDE login credentials to activate the user.
During online teaching
Participating in online teaching
- Click on the Zoom button on the Canvas course page.
Provided that you have logged in at least once to Zoom Client or via usn.zoom.us, you will be automatically connected to your Zoom account.
Note: If you see "Error code 2016", this means that you have not logged in to Zoom Client or the web page at least once, and must do that first.
- Under "Upcoming Meetings". Click on the "Join" button alongside your planned online teaching session:
Guide to the functions of Zoom
A participant has access to the following functions:
- Mute / Unmute: Switch the microphone off and on.
- Volume control (click on the ^ arrow beside the Mute / Unmute icon) allows you to adjust the microphone and speaker Zoom is currently using on the computer and to access all audio settings.
Hint! Use the following keyboard shortcut for Mute / Unmute.
- Windows: Alt + A
- Mac: Shift + Command + A
Hold down the space bar on the keyboard for temporary mute/unmute
- Start / Stop Video: Switches the camera on or off.
- Video control (click on the ^ arrow beside the Start / Stop Video icon): Switch cameras if you have more than one, select a virtual background or USN logo, or access the full range of video settings.

- Participants: See who is participating in the meeting

- Reactions: Give feedback by using reactions in Zoom.
If you don't have the same options as others in the meeting have, e.g. To raise your hand, you need to update your Zoom client to a newer version.
- Leave Meeting: Leave the meeting while it continues for the other participants.
Zoom for colloquium groups
Create your own Zoom meetings for colloquium groups
- Open a browser, type https://usn.zoom.us and click on "Sign in":
- Log in using your FEIDE credentials:
- Click on "Meetings", followed by "Schedule a New Meeting"
- Choose the meeting settings:

Guide to all settings
- Topic: Type in a title. The more descriptive the topic is, the easier it will be to find the correct Zoom link afterwards.
- Description: Type in a group description (optional).
- When: Not necessary
- Duration: Not necessary
- Time Zone: By default, Zoom uses the time zone specified in your profile (i.e. Oslo time). Click on the drop-down menu, if necessary, to set a different time zone.
- Recurring meeting: Optional. This closes "When", "Duration", "Time Zone" and "Registration". It opens additional recurrence options, so that the same link can be used several times
- Recurrence: Select "No Fixed Time".
- Registration: Not necessary
- Video: Decide whether video is to be on or off when the meeting commences. Participants may switch it off or on at any time.
- Audio: Select "Computer Audio".
- Options (click Show):
- Allow participants to join anytime: Recommended
- Mute participants on entry: Recommended
- Breakout Room pre-assign: Not recommended
- Enable focus mode when meeting starts: Not recommended
- Approve or block entry to users from specific regions/countries: Not necessary to choose
- Alternative Hosts: You can appoint another student as the Host. Type in STUDENTNUMBER@student.usn.no for the person you wish to be the Host instead of yourself.
This student must have activated a Zoom account by logging in at least once with USN (FEIDE).
- Allow participants to join anytime: Recommended
- Click on "Save" to conclude
After saving, a new page will be displayed:

The Zoom link may be copied and sent to all group members by e-mail, through Canvas, etc.
Note: The meeting link must never be shared on open pages such as Facebook, Twitter etc.
Online Examinations
Guide to taking oral examinations online
Before the examination:
- Find your examination date and time. An examination list will be sent to the Canvas room by your teacher. If you cannot find it, contact your teacher or the examinations office.
- Make yourself familiar with "Retningslinjer til muntlig eksamen på nett" (Guidelines for taking oral examinations online – in Norwegian).
On the day of the examination:
- Click on Zoom in the navigation system in Canvas, find your examination link and check the date and examination panel, if any. Then click on ‘Join’:
- Wait until the teacher gives you access:
- When the teacher is finished with the student in front of you, he/she will give you access to the examination meeting. While you are waiting you can check your audio units by clicking on ‘Test Speaker and Microphone’:
- For feedback after the examination, click again on ‘Join’ in the same meeting link and wait for the teacher to give you access. Your allotted time for feedback from the internal/external examiner(s) is set out in the examination list and is approximate
