Translate web pages in browser

How to automatically translate a web page into your preferred language?

The settings depend on your browser:

Google Chrome
  • Click the three dots in the right top corner of the browser.
  • Click Translate in the menu that appears.
(if the Translate-choice is not active, try to refresh the website first)
  • A small window will appear.
Click on 'English' to translate the website into English (default language).
To choose another language, click the three dots in the small window to find options for other languages.
  • If you don't see the new window, you might have disabled translation in your browser. Go to 'Settings' in the three-dots-menu, and then 'Language' in the left menu to check your browser settings.
Microsoft Edge
  • If you open a website in another language than one of your preferred languages, a translation symbol will appear in the end of the address bar.
  • Click on the symbol, and then click to translate the website into the language you want, selected from the drop-down menu.
  • To change which languages are among your preferred ones;
Or to enable automatic translation function, if you don't see any translation symbol in the addresss bar:
    • Click the three dots at the end up in the right corner of your browser,
    • Click 'Settings'.
    • Click on the three lines up left to open the menu.
    • Choose 'Language'.
    • At the top, you will find your preferred languages, and be able to change them.
    • Right beneath, you will find the choice to turn on/off the possibility to translate webistes.
Mozilla Firefox
  • Firefox has a function for website translations, from a symbol at the end of the address bar.
  • However, the symbol only appear when the browser detect a language that Firefox supports, and Norwegian is currently not among them.

To translate websites from Norwegian, we recommend that you use Microsoft Edge, which should be automatically installed on your USN computer. See the guide above for how to translate through Edge.

Safari (Mac)

Like Firefox, Safari has a translation function, but it does not support Norwegian for the time beeing.

To translate Norgewian web sites on a Mac, you can download the Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome browser to your Mac, and follw the steps described above.
